I contracted Electrica to upgrade my main service panel and install a NEMA 14-50 to charge my EV. Not only was Nick able to help me through the process, but he also provided very quick turnaround for the jobs. I was never left waiting for his team, as they were always ready to work on my house the moment that PG&E moved the process forward. Thank you for your professionalism and speed!

Nick and Andrew did a great job upgrading my electrical panel and adding a new EV charger. The work was completed in two days at a fair price. Very professional, arrived on time and understood everything that needed to be done. This is a very easy company to work with and I would definately hire them again to work at my home. (July 2025)

Great service, had a different company install a my main breaker box as well as install a generator transfer switch. Well needless to say is they did a horrible job. Called the good people at Electrica to inspect. The came inspected the work and explained to me in simple terms what was don't correctly and incorrectly. Quoted me on the spot for repairs and got to work. Quality was above and beyond what I expected, everything is working the way it should. Not to mention reasonable pricing, I will using Electrica for all my electrical needs from now on.

Electrica installed an EV charger. Did a great job. They re-worked the main panel a bit to accommodate the breaker, cleanly/neatly ran metal conduit to the front of the house and installed a smaller breaker box and the charger inside the garage...

I found them on Yelp and they truly exceeded my expectations. I needed a Tesla Charger installed, but my meter capacity was low. Their team handled the job flawlessly and ensured everything was done up to code. They are knowledgeable, efficient, and highly professional. I would strongly recommend them for any electrical services.

I needed to wire and install a 240v hanging power heater. We needed to have new switches from our main breaker to the backyard. They did the work on-time and at a fair price. We will use them for all of our electrical needs in the future.

I had an excellent experience with Electrica installing a Tesla Universal Wall Charger in an older house with only 100amp service. Nick responded very quickly with an estimate that was very reasonable compared to others. Andrew did the work, replacing my old 100amp service breaker, installing the Tesla/Neurio load balancer (required because of the low 100amp house service), new 60amp sub-panel, and the EV wall charger. Nick also handled the permit with Santa Clara County which took a few days but worked out well.

Does your home need rewiring?

  • Your insurance company or a home inspector flagged knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring
  • Most outlets are two-prong, with no ground wire
  • Breakers trip often, or lights flicker and dim
  • Outlets or switch plates feel warm, or you notice a burning smell
  • The house was built before the mid-1970s and the wiring was never updated
  • You plan to add an EV charger, a heat pump, or an induction range

Not sure what's behind your walls? The on-site estimate is free, we will tell you straight.

If you smell burning, turn off that breaker and call us.

Insurance company flagged your wiring?

Many insurance companies in the Bay Area now refuse to cover or renew homes with knob-and-tube wiring, and some want an electrician to check aluminum wiring before they insure the home. The same thing comes up in home inspections when you buy or sell. We replace the old wiring and close out the permit with the city, so you have the final inspection sign-off to show your insurer or buyer.

What we replace

  • Knob-and-tube wiring

Common in Bay Area homes built before the 1950s. The insulation dries out and cracks with age, and there is no ground wire. We disconnect it and run new copper circuits.

  • Aluminum branch wiring

Used in many homes built from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. Aluminum expands and loosens at the connections over the years, which can overheat outlets and switches. We replace it with copper.

  • Ungrounded two-prong circuits

Without a ground wire, a surge protector can't do its job, and a three-prong outlet is only for show. We run new grounded circuits, so your outlets are grounded for real.

  • Old cloth-covered wiring

Rubber and cloth insulation from the 1940s to the early 1960s gets brittle with age. We replace it before it cracks inside the walls.

  • Kitchen, laundry, and bathroom circuits

Older homes often run the whole kitchen on one or two circuits. We add dedicated circuits, with GFCI and AFCI protection where code requires it.

  • The whole house or just part of it

Sometimes the whole house needs new wiring, sometimes only a few rooms do. You can also choose the scope: the outlets only, or the outlets and the lighting. We will recommend what makes sense for your home.

How a rewire goes

  1. 1

    Estimate

You call us or send a few photos of your panel and outlets. We come out, check your wiring, and give you a clear price. The estimate is free.

  2. 2

    Permit

Rewiring needs a city permit. We pull it and schedule the inspections.

  3. 3

    Rewiring

We run new copper circuits and replace the outlets and switches. If your panel is old or too small, we can replace it in the same project.

  4. 4

    Inspection

The city inspector checks the new wiring before the walls are closed (rough inspection) and again at the end (final inspection). We meet the inspector on site and close out the permit.

Planning an EV charger or a heat pump?

If you're rewiring anyway, it's the best time to add circuits for an EV charger, a heat pump, or an induction range. We plan the new wiring around what you want to add, so you don't have to open the walls twice. We have installed 500+ EV chargers across the Bay Area, so we know what these loads need.

FAQ

Can we stay in the house while you rewire it?
Yes, most families do. We work room by room and usually have the power back on by the end of the day. Expect some noise and dust in the rooms we're working in.
Will you have to open up my walls?
Yes, we will. New wiring has to reach every outlet and switch, so we cut openings in the walls where it is needed.
Do I need a permit to rewire my house?
Yes. Rewiring needs a city permit and inspections. We pull the permit, meet the inspector, and close it out. Unpermitted wiring tends to come up when you sell the home.
Do I have to pay the full price upfront?
No. You pay step by step as the project moves along.
Do I need to rewire the whole house?
Not always. Sometimes only part of the house has old wiring, for example the original rooms of a home with a newer addition. You can also choose the scope: the outlets only, or the outlets and the lighting. We will recommend what makes sense for your home.
Do I need a panel upgrade when I rewire?
Not always. If your panel is an old Zinsco or Federal Pacific, or it's too small for what you plan to add, it makes sense to replace it in the same project. We do both, so you deal with one crew and one schedule.
Is knob-and-tube wiring dangerous?
Yes, and it has to be replaced. Besides its age, it has real technical problems: the insulation dries out and cracks, there is no ground wire, and over the decades people often spliced new wire into it or buried it under attic insulation, which it was not designed for.
Will my insurance cover a house with knob-and-tube wiring?
No. Insurance companies won't write a new policy or renew one for a home with knob-and-tube wiring. Replacing it and closing out the permit solves the problem. And if you sell the home, the cost comes back through the sale price: old wiring is one of the first things buyers and inspectors discount.
I have aluminum wiring. Do I have to replace all of it?
Yes, you should replace it with copper. Aluminum loosens at the connections over the years and can overheat outlets and switches. Copper is the long-term fix.
Can I just swap my two-prong outlets for three-prong ones?
No. A three-prong outlet needs a ground wire behind it, and without one the third prong does nothing. For a real ground, the circuit needs new wiring.
How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
Start with the age of the house and the outlets. If it was built before the mid-1970s and the wiring was never updated, if most outlets are two-prong, or if breakers trip and lights flicker, have it checked. The on-site estimate is free.
Do you rewire Eichler homes?
Yes. Eichlers have no attic or crawl space, so the new wiring runs through the roof.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Electrica is a licensed California electrical contractor (CA #1023830) and carries general liability insurance.
